DELTA MAX was engaged to perform Business Needs Requirement Analyses and Technology Reviews for two progressive Midwestern Public Utilities. In both cases, the Projects were to analyze and present the Technology Needs and Alternatives available, recommended solutions, and detailed project implementation and action plans to client top executives for their follow on actions.
I. Small town Utility...Big Time ambitions and services interests
An APPA industry-leading small Utility in the Midwest asked Delta Max to evaluate its Technology Status and Plans, and to advise and counsel top executives as to the directions the Utility should take for future Information System development and implementation. A thorough and detailed Analysis was performed which greatly changed both the orientation of the IT Department's application development, but also the underlying infrastructure philosophy systems approach. Collaborative systems were seen to be the answer, and Delta Max recommended Lotus Notes for the Utility's E-Mail and communications platform for the future. DELTA MAX trained every Utility PC user in the Notes client, and helped this client emerge from its previous technological limitations and get on the fast track for the new Millennium.
Since that implementation of Notes and the subsequent new interest by the Utility in using IT in the new Utility De-Regulated Environment, the Utility has embraced communications and internet technology, and moved quickly down the path of the integrated Communications Utility Concept.
Today, the Utility is a model for the small town Utility of the Future, with dynamic executive team and exciting new approaches to serving the area's customers with not only electric power and water as traditionally, but also web connectivity, media and communications options.
II. Hub City Public Utility ... Total Systems Evaluation
A larger by an order of magnitude key hub city Utility had all the problems of their large city counterparts: multiple systems, city growth and sprawl, independently designed and legacy applications, old and new technology side by side, staffing and maintenance costs spiraling...you name it. Still, with all this, the Utility maintained an excellent service and image reputation with their customers, mostly due to their outstanding people and community involvement.
Their new Top Executive had engaged DELTA MAX in the past and asked us to accept an engagement to review their IT systems and proposed ERP system adoption, and help the Utility transition into the next phases of its growth as a De-Regulated Public Utility.
DELTA MAX evaluated the Utility's current operations and IT plans in depth, and produced a detailed and comprehensive analysis which allowed the client to correctly position the Utility for a Total Systems implementation of SAP R/3. Detailed staff, technology, and process recommendations were made and implemented by the Utility over the next few years, which has helped the Utility Management create a prototype for a modern, mid-sized progressive Communications Utility. The SAP/R3 implementation has reduced application development and integration time and cost, and now forms the basis for the utility's future expansion into new services and capabilities for its citizen customers.
