Problems of Typical Software Training Programs
Training is beneficial, everyone agrees, but ...
Training proposals usually present in terms of costs and impact on personnel schedules, with specific benefits assumed to be given and hard to quantify.
This is backwards, as the training benefits can and should be well known and quantified before the costs and choices are compared.
When organizations assume training benefits, then worry about costs, the results are always less than optimal.
Further, the training program benefits are usually not easily justifiable in normal management terms.
And, often, have long term instead of immediately visible short term benefits.
So, with all of the above, how does management even know if it even got its money's worth from its training investment?
Management needs to approach Training as it does with any other project, in a rational, systematic fashion.

Questions Which Should Proceed A Software Training Program
To plan an effective Software Training Program, Management should first ask at least some, if not all, of the following questions:
What training, exactly, is needed?
What training is merely "nice"?
Who is to be trained?
At what level are they now?
When should we start?
Which subjects are critical?
What sequence of training and personnel should we use?
What will be the real benefits in management terms?
How Will we measure our progress?
Only when these questions have been thoroughly answered, will any discussion of costs and organization impact have any real management relevance.
To develop these answers and generate a great Training Program, DELTA MAX has developed an extensive Software Training Productivity Methodology.
To address the potential benefits available from training programs, we use a survey methodology to assess the current level of software capability and skill needs for each of your employees in each department.
The format is simple, input is fast, and, more importantly, the assessment of training benefits in terms of productivity are those of the individual employee.
Thus, when a training program is implemented, the employee has automatically "bought in" to an increase in his/her personal effectiveness.
Contrast this approach to management-driven programs overlaid on employees who have not been asked their opinions or provided any input to the training objectives.
The Training Productivity Report generated by this survey performs the following analysis:
Assesses current skill level, for each software system or product in use,
Estimates productivity increase potential through training,
Shows which topics are important, and which are less so, and priority,
Provides a level of training guide, and
Provides a management guide to estimating productivity increase.
DELTA MAX often includes this report as part of its Technology Review Service.
